Close-up pulls: judge the print, not the label

Graphic tees and embroidered caps. Size matters less than whether the ink and thread look right up close.

Print faults a close photo reveals

Screen and digital prints fail in a few predictable ways. Colours that should meet leave a white gap. Fine lines fill in and blur. Ink cracks where the fabric was folded hot. On white cotton, a photo print can show bands across it. None of this shows in a full-garment photo taken from a metre away, which is what a standard check-in shot usually is.

The splatter tee on this list is a special case: its graphic is meant to look rough. Ask for the close-up anyway and compare it with the seller's photo; a print that matches the listing is a pass even if it looks messy.

Embroidery and the back of the panel

Embroidery gets judged from both sides. From the front, look for loose loops, gaps in satin stitches and letters that lean. From inside, a stiff backing that frays or a knot of thread can scratch. On caps, ask for the inside band as well: it shows the adjuster and the stitching that holds the front panel.

Thread colour under warehouse lighting can look a shade off. If a colour matters, ask for one photo near a window. That request costs nothing to write and saves an argument about whether the cap is mint or teal.
